Tupelo Honey Cafe

My husband recently started his last year of his Masters program and has a very busy semester ahead of him. I have always admired his dedication to his education, even in his undergrad it was as if all the world slipped away when he did homework. Right now we are in this beautiful, not quite fall/not quite summer limbo where the temperatures just hover in the 80's and I knew I needed to get in an outdoor adventure. I decided that we would go to brunch at Tupelo Honey Café and then explore Theodore Roosevelt Island (post later this week).

I had scoped out the menu before hand and knew that I would be getting the sweet potato pancake and fried chicken. I was almost doubting my decision when they brought out the biscuit as the meal starter. It was so perfect and soft that Ben said he probably should have gotten the biscuits and gravy.

Once our meals came we were very happy with them.

I thought it was going to be a pancake made out of sweet potatoes, but it was a pancake with sweet potato in it. It was very fluffy and flavorful, a wonderful mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg. I have no clue what they spiced the pecans with, but they were SPICY. I couldn't eat them.
My next statement will probably make all southerners cringe, but for me, the girl who grew up in the southwest, the golden standard of fried chicken is Albertson's.

This heart-shaped fried chicken was the best fried chicken I have ever had. It was so juicy and the coating was crispy and perfectly seasoned. Sooooooo delicious.

Two all-natural, farm-fresh eggs, prepared over hard with maple peppered bacon, lettuce, tomato and smoked jalapeño aioli on sourdough wheat.

Ben ordered the smoked jalapeño fried egg BLT with goat cheese grits.  To the extent of both of our very limited southern knowledge, the grits were tasty and I would not have minded getting my own side. Ben loved his sandwich, especially the smoked jalapeño aioli and the addition of the egg to the BLT.

I wish we lived closer and could make this a regular place.

  1. This looks so delicious - especially that fried chicken. Also biscuits are my weakness 😊
